HELLLOOOOO, 2014! A 2013 Book-ographic & New Year’s Resolutions

Happy 2014, y’all! I just want to say a big THANK YOU to both old and new readers of Paper Breathers; I’ve learned so much from you, and you have no clue how grateful I feel that you’ve stuck around for all my long rants, clumsy book reviews, and random bursts of feels. I haven’t been as active in the book blogging community as I’d have liked because of real life (and I think that will be the case for the next five years, unfortunately), but I’ve truly enjoyed talking to those of you who have taken the time to stop by. 🙂

My recap of Paper Breathers in 2013 will be a short one because I only started this blog three months ago, but it’ll be interesting to see how these stats change over time…

And finally, here are my new year’s resolutions – I’ve picked out three that are easy enough to remember, and that apply to both my online and offline lives. When I check back at the end of 2014, I want to be able to check off each of these resolutions and proudly say, Yes, I did do that this year. Yes, I can keep the promises I make with myself.

  1. BE POSITIVE / Pick out good aspects of every book; smile everyday and recite Mary Oliver’s “Why I Wake Early.”
  2. BE BOLD / Try new genres; rant more; ask more questions.
  3. CHERISH TIME / Schedule things and use my planner more; sleep more; procrastinate less.

What are your new year’s resolutions? What are you looking forward to in 2014?

    • Thanks, Kim! I should have mentioned that I made the graphic from infogr.am... spared me hours of work, haha. Already on my way to being more productive!

  1. Okay, at first I was going to cry for you since I saw the 1 and a 1/2 stars for your average book rating, and then I realized that it was out of three stars, not five 😛 I hope that you will be able to find more good books this year, and maybe even make the average rating over 50% 🙂 I usually really enjoy all the books I read (which you probably already know), so my average rating is probably around 80% or more, haha.

Your goals are great! Especially the one that includes ranting more. I love rants 😉 Have a great year, Sophie!

    • Oh no, I’ll have to change that next time! I don’t know why I used a three-star system since it could be easily translated to five stars. >_< I'm hoping for a better book year too! When I was on Goodreads, my average rating was 3 stars, so I'm not TOO far off of my norm, but I wish it was higher. Gotta be more selective (or less critical)!

And thanks! That's one goal I'm definitely looking forward to. Happy 2014 to you too!

    • Aww, thanks Katie. 😀 I’ve enjoyed reading your blog, and I always come away with more books for my to-read list. I can’t wait to see what new books 2014 will bring our way!

  2. Super cool stats! I love making stats, though mine never look half so cool as yours do. 😉 This year I’m trying to be bold with my reading too. I read just YA, so I want to branch out and try more MG or Adult. Who knows?! I might love them. (Never know until you try, right?!) Good luck with your goals for this year!

    • Thanks, Cait! Stat-making is so much easier now with all the free programs that are available online, haha. And branching out is a great idea – I’m all for trying new things! I’m looking forward to seeing your reading choices this year. 😀

  3. Last year, I read books mostly by male authors. I hope to change that this year. I also want to try reading a nonfiction book but it’s so hard to convince myself. Have a great 2014 reading year!

    • Yeah, I found my author gender stats a bit weird; I don’t pick books by author gender though, so I’m not too concerned about reading more from one gender or another. 🙂 And I thought you do read non-fiction? Memoirs count, too! 😛

Have a great reading year to you too!

      • Oh, yes! One and only memoir from Murakami 😉 Other than that, I can’t seem to get past 10 pages of any nonfiction book -.- I started reading Quiet by Susan Cain last year but did not finish. I guess I have this ‘phobia’ after being so disappointed with a nonfiction book a couple of years back.

        • I actually just finished reading Quiet! And maybe trying a different type of non-fiction (ex. history, chef memoirs, essays, etc.) would help? Hopefully you’ll run into some good non-fiction soon.
