Sci-Fi November, Blast Off!

Sci-Fi November
November is a wonderful month that embodies post-Halloween-candy-high and pre-Christmas-music-anticipation. In the bookish world, November is the time of post-paranormal-books and pre-Christmas-romances – it’s the time for Sci-Fi November! This year, Rinn and Lisa will be co-hosting the event, and I’m looking forward to meeting new and old friends and bonding over science fiction together! ๐Ÿš€

Both science-fiction and fantasy books allow me to escape reality for a few hours, but sci-fi holds a special place in my heart because it shows what could be reality.ย (I’m no mad scientist! yet)

I have to admit that I don’t really “do” sci-fi things outside of books – there’s that one time in high school when my older cousin dragged me to the movie theatre to watch the newest Star Wars movie (which was really good!), and I watched Interstellar last winter, but that’s about it. This month, time permitting, I’m hoping to watch Ender’s Game, The Martian, and The Maze Runner… if I do, I’ll definitely tweet about it!

  • Sci-fi book reviews every Tuesday! (Ready Player One,ย Ender’s Game, and others!)
  • Finish my first sci-fi book bingo BECAUSE IT’S BEEN TOO LONG
  • Discussion on various sci-fi topics (for real this year!)
  • Read sci-fi! (Because I still have that otherย book bingo *coughs*) Here’s my tentative list:
    • Freedom’s Choice by Anne McCaffrey
    • Viciousย by V.E. Schwab
    • A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray
    • The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson (I’m sneaking this in here to fulfill steampunk…ย ๐Ÿ‘€)

What are you reading for Sci-Fi Month?
What’s your favorite thing about sci-fi?

  1. I was quite the opposite: I love sci-fi growing up but found I watched it more via movies and tv shows than from books. I’ve been able to catch up on the books end slowly but surely in the last few years, which has been awesome. Hope you enjoy the month’s events! I have V.E. Schwab’s Vicious on my TBR queue but I don’t know when I’ll get around to it…Brandon Sanderson’s The Rithmatist was a really interesting read ๐Ÿ™‚

    • That’s awesome, Lianne! Would love some movie/TV recommendations. ๐Ÿ˜‰ So I just finished Vicious the day I started reading it and it was INSANE. It actually reminded me a bit of Kick-Ass the movie in terms of the dark, gritty, angsty, gory bits. I’m looking forward to The Rithmatist but not sure if it counts as sci-fi? All these genres are mixing together nowadays, haha.

  2. Have you already seen the show Firefly? If not, you should definitely add it to your list. ๐Ÿ™‚ I started a German sci-fi novel (although it will probably take me the rest of the year, not just the month) and I’m hopefully going to read Illuminae, which I’m worried I won’t like. I was happy to see on Goodreads earlier that you’re reading Vicious. I hope you love it!

    • No I haven’t! Definitely adding it to my list now. And Vicious OMG CAN I RANT TO YOU? I just gave it a 5-star rating and now I’m not sure if it was amazing or if it just had a huge shock factor. Or both?

I’ve heard of numerous glowing reviews for Illuminae, but also a few not-so-glowing ones… best of luck, and I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts about it! And hmm, a book that’s going to take 2 months to read sounds difficult too, haha. Are you fluent in German?

      • Yes! I’d love to hear your thoughts. Either here or DM me if it’s too spoiler-y.
Exactly, people are either rave about Illuminae or find it disappointing. I don’t like Amie Kaufman’s Starbound series, so that’s part of my hesitation.
Hah, well, I was pretty fluent after study abroad (it was my major), but until a couple months ago, I hadn’t read, spoken, or listened to it in 5 years.

  3. Looks like a great line up for SciFi Month! I haven’t watched a ton of sci fi lately, I’ve missed some movies (and shows), but I’m slowly catching up thanks to netflix. Continuum and Dark Matter are two shows I’ve really liked that I hadn’t even heard of a few months ago. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thanks, Greg! I haven’t heard of Continuum or Dark Matter, but I’ll definitely look them up! I don’t have Netflix, so that eliminates a lot of my options, haha. (I also find that I have a shorter attention span now for TV shows, which was why I chose mainly movies as my target for this month. But from all the suggestions everyone is giving me, looks like I’ll have to start watching some shows too! :P)

  4. I’d like to get to Vicious soon too! I’m thinking about joining in on sci fi Nov at least a little, but since I’m helping to host Nonfiction November this month, I’m not sure I’ll have the time. I’m excited to read all your reviews though! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • AHHHHH VICIOUS I accidentally finished reading it in a day. (I was very non-functional during lab meeting this morning, haha.) I won’t be reviewing it this month since I already planned out other books for the month, but you should move it up on your list! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m always torn between sci-fi and non-fiction in November – I’ve thought about alternating them every year, but I’m greedy and want to celebrate both at the same time, lol. (My Nonfic Nov intro post will come out later this week, and I look forward to hanging out on your blog for the non-fiction celebration!)

    • Yes, I’m going to try harder to accomplish what I say this year! (Last year I wanted to start watching Dr. Who, but never did… oops! Hoping movies would feel like smaller commitments.) Firefly is now on my list! ๐Ÿ˜€
